COMM 102 Interpersonal Communication
This course explores the practical and theoretical foundations that frame our interpersonal communication. Students will examine the various theories of interpersonal communication through the textbook readings, exercises, popular films, and discussions. A special emphasis is then placed upon connecting the theories and practices to our everyday interpersonal communication behaviors.

III. Catalog Course Description
This course explores the practical and theoretical foundations that frame our interpersonal communication. Students will examine the various theories of interpersonal communication through the textbook readings, exercises, popular films, and discussions. A special emphasis is then placed upon connecting the theories and practices to our everyday interpersonal communication behaviors.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Describe (synthesize) the centrality of communication to the relationship processes as evidenced by class discussion, papers, and critical thinking exercises.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the stages of relational development, as evidenced by response papers and quizzes.
- Critically analyze human interactions as evidenced in course papers and class discussions addressing the issues.
- Identify the influence of popular culture upon the expectations for such interactions, as evidenced in course papers and class discussions addressing the issues.
- Research areas of interest in interpersonal communication in a scholarly manner, as evidenced by the scholarly research paper.
- Elaborate areas of interest in interpersonal communication in a scholarly manner, as evidenced by the presentation.
V. Topical Outline (Course Content)
Required course content: centrality of communication to relationships, factors affecting human communication and behavior, patterns for relationship development and deterioration. Other concepts relating to interpersonal communication may be covered at the discretion of the instructor based upon the selected textbook and areas of interest.
