ADDS 203 Screening and Assessment

This course will introduce the student to a systematic approach to screening, initial assessment and treatment planning to determine the most appropriate course of treatment action given the client’s needs and available resources. This is a collaborative process in which students will learn to value the client’s current perspective, as well as, the stage of readiness for treatment. Students will be expected to synthesize and appropriately document the results of the screening and assessment process.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course will introduce the student to a systematic approach to screening, initial assessment and treatment planning to determine the most appropriate course of treatment action given the client’s needs and available resources. This is a collaborative process in which students will learn to value the client’s current perspective, as well as, the stage of readiness for treatment. Students will be expected to synthesize and appropriately document the results of the screening and assessment process.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Construct the established diagnostic criteria using ASAM and DSM-V for substance use disorders and describe treatment modalities and placement criteria within the continuum of care.
  • Determine treatment services appropriate to the personal and cultural identify and language of the client.
  • Establish a helping relationship with the client characterized by warmth, respect, genuineness, concreteness and empathy.
  • Recognize and identify stages of change.
  • Facilitate the client’s engagement in the treatment and recovery process by utilizing Motivational Interviewing principles.
  • Understand basic criteria for suicide risk, danger to self and others, withdrawal symptoms and co-occurring issues.
  • Understand how to use a comprehensive bio-social assessment process that is sensitive to age, gender, racial and ethnic cultural issues and disabilities.
  • Recognize the need for consultation and clinical supervision in the screening and assessment process.

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

Explore the role of Screening and Assessment in the substance abuse treatment field. Discuss the role of the Screening process and explore a variety of screening instruments, their sensitivity to culture, gender, race, disabilities, etc. and their validity and reliability. Discuss the role of the Assessment process and explore a variety of assessments, their sensitivity to culture, gender, race, disabilities, etc. and their validity and reliability. Discuss the differences between ASAM PPC and the use of the DSM V as a diagnostic tool. Explore ASAM PPC and the application of ASAM PPC criteria in the Assessment process Explore the DSM V criteria for a substance use disorder Explore the "spirit" of Motivational Interviewing and practice the application of MI principles in practicing the administration of screening tools and an assessment. Explore and practice the assessment of suicide and homicide risk and reduction of risk and withdrawal symptoms as well as, explore how mental health problems color the assessment process Explore the role of consultation and clinical supervision in the Screening and Assessment process.
