The Surgical First Assisting program at the College of Southern Idaho provides advanced training for students who are already Certified Surgical Technologists to achieve a higher level of performance in the operating room. The role of the first assistant is to assist the surgeon by performing advanced technical skills during surgical procedures. At the completion of this nationally accredited program students will earn an Associate of Applied Science. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP, 1361 Park Street, Clearwater, FL 33756; Phone: 727-210-2350, Fax: 727-210-2354).
Applying to this program is a separate application process from applying to the College. You will not be able to declare this program as your major until you have met with the program director. To promote success on the certification/licensure examination(s), all Required Courses must be passed with a grade of C or better.
Upon successful completion of the Surgical First Assist program, a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate entry-level cognitive, psychomotor and affective learning domains necessary for entry into the field of surgical first assisting.
- Demonstrate compliance with the criteria set forth in the most current standards and guidelines for an accredited educational program in surgical first assisting.
- Provide safe, competent, surgical interventions under the direct supervision of a surgeon as part of the health care team.
- Qualify for national certification testing for surgical first assisting.
