This course guides students through the principles and practices used in the rehabilitation of individuals with neurological conditions. The principles incorporate musculoskeletal and neurological therapeutic exercise across the lifespan. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, neurodevelopmental theory and other facilitation techniques are learned. Pediatric training for developmental conditions are explored. Includes lab. Prerequisites: PTAE 101, PTAE 107, PTAE 110, PTAE 113. Corequisites: PTAE 207 PTAE 208, PTAE 211.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

• Analyze and draw conclusions regarding best practices for rehabilitation of individuals with neurological conditions across the lifespan and continuum of care.
• Demonstrate the ability to implement a comprehensive treatment plan established by the PT for a neurological dysfunction, including functional training, balance, gait, developmental activities, patient/family education, postural training, and therapeutic exercise.
• Describe appropriate levels of follow-up for a specific neurological population.
• Document neurologic interventions performed in the SOAP format.
• Design and present a communication plan to assist in the implementation of interventions including examples of verbal, non-verbal and written communication to patient, family, and appropriate members of the healthcare team.
• Develop strategies for review, study, and preparation for the physical therapist assistant board examination.
