As the final course in the Registered Nursing Program sequence, the focus of this course is the development of nursing knowledge of physical and mental wellness and illness across the lifespan, the role of the nurse, and caring by providing patient-centered care to individuals, families, and communities through specialty nursing practice. Emphasis will be on emergency nursing principles. Pharmacology, therapeutic nutrition, medical terminology and critical thinking are integrated throughout the course. Prerequisite: NURR 210. Corequisite: Wellness (at least 1 cr), SOCY 101. Humanities.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

• Understand the physiology and pathophysiology associated with maternal-child and mental health patients.
• Identify appropriate nursing interventions for maternal-child and mental health patients.
• Create and provide individualized, prioritized plans of care for maternal-child and mental health patients.
• Adhere to the responsibilities and role of the professional nurse concerning: Informed consent, electronic medical records, and receiving, verifying and following up on health care provider orders.
• Apply critical thinking concept sin nursing care to maternal-child and mental health patients.
• Communicate appropriate information using multiple health care communication tools to other health care team members.
• Understand the roles and skills necessary to lead nursing care.
• Begin leading nursing care for a group of patients.
