IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Be able to perform on the major instrument at required levels of expertise
- Demonstrate a requisite knowledge of music theory
- Demonstrate requisite abilities in sight singing and ear training, including the ability to sing the first stanza of America the Beautiful in tune in your choice of key
- Demonstrate requisite abilities in large-ensemble performance practice
- Demonstrate intermediate keyboard proficiency (see attached keyboard requirements). Please note that you must be able to complete the entire proficiency exam in a single sitting.
V. Topical Outline (Course Content)
The primary focus of this course is weekly study of a particular brass instrument; the student and instructor will work together to select appropriate solo and chamber literature to perform on a recital of at least one-half hour
Because this is a capstone class, the student must demonstrate retention and mastery of sophomore-level skills in music theory and aural skills by taking a comprehensive exam in each.
The student will also demonstrate mastery of basic piano skills by taking an exam on this instrument
The student will be expected to assemble and submit a portfolio that includes evidence of successful completion of all requirements for an Associate’s Degree in music; the portfolio will include audio and video recordings of the recital, statements from faculty verifying that the student has passed his/her comprehensive and piano examinations, and programs from previous ensemble and solo performances during the student’s time at CSI.
VI. Delivery Methodologies
Required Assignments
Prepare assigned scales, technical exercises and/or solo literature for each succeeding lesson
Prepare and performance of a solo recital of at least ½ hour in length
Preparation and submission of a portfolio containing materials as described in the MUSI 243 syllabus
Required Exams
Graded weekly on preparation of assignments
Performance in a solo recital of at least ½ hour in length
Comprehensive exams in ensemble performance practice, music theory, aural skills and piano proficiency
