III. Catalog Course Description

This course will cover Drill and Ceremony, Orientation, ILETS, Court Procedures/ Rules of Evidence, Criminal Law, Laws of Arrest, Search and Seizure, Use of Force, Crimes Against Children, Report Writing, Sexual Assault Investigation, Domestic Violence Investigation, Traffic Law, Special Needs Citizens, Crime Scene Investigation, Collect and Preservation of Evidence, Finger Printing, Traffic Collision, DUI Investigation and Standard Field Sobriety Testing.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of ethical and moral behavior associated with the Law Enforcement field as defined by the Idaho Peace Officers Standards and Training Council
  • Recognize the various techniques and methods used by police officers including written and oral communication
  • Know the Idaho law as it pertains to the criminal code, traffic code, criminal procedures and rules of evidence
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of law enforcement equipment
  • Introduce students to problem resolution and decision making skills as they relate to the performance of police duties.
  • Recognize and demonstrate the importance of physical and mental fitness as it relates to the law enforcement career field,
  • Examine the various techniques of criminal investigation.

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

The history, philosophy and cultural diversity principles related to Law Enforcement An understanding of homeland security issues and how to access federal agencies An understanding of the issues surrounding Miranda as it relates to law enforcement First Aid and CPR techniques Principles, Skills and techniques of surviving the job of police officer Understand that public safety personnel must satisfy the expectations of public trust An insight into the history, law, and procedural options as it relates to juveniles Knowledge of grieving process and proper death notification procedures Knowledge of and ability to implement effective communication skills Basic knowledge of illegal drugs to include visual identification, scheduling, classification, symptoms associated with use and drug trends in Idaho Basic understanding of the criminal gangs found in Idaho Basic understanding of Idaho Codes dealing with drugs and how to gather intelligence regarding drug use Understand the basics of auto theft investigation and financial crimes A basic understating of digital evidence retrieval Introduce basic patrol academy students to principles and skill of general uniformed patrol operations and call response Gain insight to different approaches to policing Identify the components and benefits of crime prevention Basic knowledge of healthy lifestyle choices to include healthy nutrition, stress management, and following a fitness plan
