This course explores the role of the counselor working with the chemically dependent family from identification of roles through intervention strategies and treatment modalities. Course topics will include but is not limited to; conflict in the family, characteristics of the dysfunctional family roles, family system theory, co-dependency, Adult Children of Alcoholics/Addicts, intervention techniques and strategies, treatment techniques for families, cultural sensitivity/differences and resources for family recovery work.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course explores the role of the counselor working with the chemically dependent family from identification of roles through intervention strategies and treatment modalities. Course topics will include but is not limited to; conflict in the family, characteristics of the dysfunctional family roles, family system theory, co-dependency, Adult Children of Alcoholics/Addicts, intervention techniques and strategies, treatment techniques for families, cultural sensitivity/differences and resources for family recovery work.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Identify, explain and differentiate roles in families including components of effective parenting, components of effective parenting programs, role modeling, norms and value development, praise vs. criticism.
  • Summarize characteristics of co-dependency.
  • Recognize personal issues that may interfere with treatment of families.
  • Summarize the impact of cultural differences in treatment.
  • Recognize potential for and signs/symptoms of domestic violence.
  • Describe how substance abuse disorders affect families and concerned others.
  • Recognize the cultural difference among families.
  • Recognize differences in punishment and discipline, logical consequences and age appropriate rules and consistent enforcement.
  • Recognize characteristics of healthy family organization and management/safety and supervision and value of routine vs. random chaos.
  • Differentiate between healthy/unhealthy family communication patterns.
  • Identify community resources that are valuable in a family’s recovery process

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

Explore the definition of "family". Discuss how chemical dependency impacts the entire family system. Describe the differences between chemical dependency counselors and family therapists (i.e. education and training, certification and licensure) and their role in working with chemically dependent families. Explore the differences in theory and practice between family therapists and chemically dependency counselors. Explore a variety of intervention tools used in working with chemically dependent families. Explore the role of community resources in a family’s recovery process.
