MHC 8066 Neurodevelopment and Counseling: Advanced Seminar

By participating in this class, students will be supported in becoming better able to intentionally use neuroscience and related tools to assess and treat client concerns. Knowledge of neuroscience and its applications to assessment and treatment allows for broader insight into clients’ internal processing and enhances case conceptualization of a client’s behaviors, emotions, and cognitions and related treatment planning.

The course teaches advanced counseling skills, strategies, and techniques relevant to trauma-informed clinical care. Students will demonstrate their ability to conceptualize cases from a neurodevelopmental perspective and will generate neurodevelopmentally aware interactions as counselors through targeting different brain systems. They will successfully explain how early experiences alter and affect the unfolding of the individual’s neurodevelopment.
