SWO 516 Military Social Work Practice: Introduction to Systems, Culture, Health, and Social Issues

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of military culture and how service members, military families and veterans cope and thrive during & post military service. This military foundations course will introduce students to the history of uniformed social work & military social work to include the roles, responsibilities, values in military settings. The different military contexts (active duty, guard, reserve & veteran) are introduced and ethical issues for working in this environment are examined. Students will explore the history, culture, norms and values of service members, military families and veterans. Additionally, this course will provide students with the primary competency area of engaging with Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF). This area includes student preparation to work with Service Members, Veterans and their Families in both clinical and military settings.  

Students will also learn about the challenges commonly encountered by service members in the U.S. military and how those challenges arise from the unique nature and demands of military life.
