DST101 Introduction to Deaf Studies
An introduction to the study of the language, culture and community of Deaf people. The course covers topics in Deaf history, education, sociology, language, legal issues, art & literature, audism, services for the Deaf, organizations, assistive technology, and the nature of Deafhood. Several controversial issues will be analyzed such as oralism, methods of Deaf education, signing systems, and biomedical ethics (including cochlear implants and genetic engineering). Taught primarily in ASL and audio interpretation and/or interpreter is included.
