Math Policy for Newly Matriculated Students
Effective Summer 2019 and Forward
All newly matriculated Northern Essex students in an Associate Degree or Certificate program that requires at least one college level math course will be required to take at least the first college level math course required in their academic major prior to completing 15 college level credits. This policy applies to all of the college’s math pathways. Students are required to take and complete a math course that has a number between MAT 100 and MAT 299 within 15 college level credits. Students enrolled in the Exploratory Program will be advised to register for a college-level math course after they have tentatively selected a major so that they can follow the appropriate Math Pathway.
All advisors, both faculty and professional advisors will have the authority and responsibility of enforcing the requirements of this policy with all students who fall within the parameters of this policy. Students who meet with an advisor, either physically, electronically, or by telephone must be registered into the appropriate math pathway that leads to the completion of their program(s) or certificate(s). Advisors are expected to utilize the High School GPA of 2.7 or higher, assessment placements, Fusion Math pairs, previously completed Developmental Math, or any other method acceptable by the college to accomplish this goal.
Most programs and certificates, as well as their respective Curriculum Maps, have a Math requirement in the first semester. All students are required to follow the sequence for their academic programs and certificates as they are listed in the Academic Catalog. Following the sequence, will enable students to complete the requirements of their programs in a timely manner, therefore graduating on time. Students who do not follow the recommended sequence in the Academic Catalog could potentially add on an extra semester or two to their academic goals or plans.
