TS4000 Naval Combat System Engineering

Covers the definition and integration of naval combat systems. The emphasis will be on how the various detection, engagement, and control elements interact with each other and on how to combine them into an efficient and survivable combat system. Also addressed will be topside arrangements, signature reduction, readiness assessment, embedded training, and support system interfaces.

At the completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Describe how command and control principles are incorporated into the design of an integrated combat system.
  • Estimate communication and computational requirements to support C4ISR in an integrated system.
  • Describe different network topologies and implications for network-centric systems.
  • Describe the systems engineering process as it applies to combat systems design.
  • Select a combat systems suite that satisfies mission requirements.
  • Arrange the elements of the combat systems suite on a platform while satisfying critical design constraints and without unnecessarily sacrificing performance.
  • Verify the combat systems design satisfies key performance requirements including survivability.
  • Trade design strategies to optimize survivability versus cost and performance.
  • Address electromagnetic compatibility issues in the design of the combat system.
  • Integrate safety considerations into the design of the combat system.
  • Work as a team to design a combat system satisfying specified mission requirements.
