This course studies the history of war and international relations in East and Southeast Asia since the end of the eighteenth century.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students who complete this course successfully will be able to analyze and evaluate:

  • The consequences of Chinese weakness for the dissolution of regional order in the Far East in the 19th and 20th centuries;
  • The amplifying effect of Japanese and Western imperial ambitions on said dissolution;
  • The regional and global consequences of the Communist victories in China, North Korea, and Vietnam; and
  • The influence of global politics on the onset, conduct, and consequences of war in Asia in modern times.
