The Africana Studies Minor at Kean University is a 15-credit program designed to develop students' scientific and humanistic skills through the systematic study of people of African descent and their cultural contributions. This minor equips students to examine, analyze, and research Africa and its diaspora, encompassing communities within and beyond the continent. Students will explore critical issues, themes, perspectives, debates, and emerging trends in the field of Africana Studies. The program not only introduces the interdisciplinary nature of Africana Studies but also delves into significant historical, social, political, and cultural issues that have shaped the experiences of people of African descent, particularly in the United States and across the diaspora.
This academic minor allows students to select from a concentrated collection of courses that foster focused and interdisciplinary knowledge of the major issues, theoretical debates, topics, and collective practices concerning Africa, people of African Descent and their cultural products. The course offerings are content rich and aim to build critical analytical reasoning such that students gain understanding of the intersection between political, cultural, economic and social aspects of African-descended/Black Diasporic experiences.
