Instruction and Curriculum, Certification: Teaching English as a Second or Other Language for Professional Educators
Program Description
The Graduate Certification Program in Teaching English as a Second or Other Language Option is designed to prepare practicing teachers to develop an understanding of how first and second languages are learned, and to acquire strategies to assist English Language Learners in achieving proficiency in a variety of ESL/EEL settings.
Degree Requirements
Completion of one of the following "Language/Cultural Learning Opportunities":
- Work or live in a setting where languages other than English are spoken
- One course (3-credits) in a foreign language
- Passing scores on OPI/WPT target language test (a language other than English)
In addition to the University’s admission requirements:
- New Jersey Standard Instructional Certificate or CEAS
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
- Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0*
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended.
- Personal statement
- Departmental interview may be required.
- Professional Resume/CV
- Official TOEFL or IELTS score reports for international students.
- OPI and WPT in English by the end of first semester
