Earth Science (B.S.)
The B.S. Earth Science Program in the SESS at Kean University offers its students an education that is based on the growing and developing needs of environmental professions. Students synthesize geology, hydrology, meteorology, oceanography, geochemistry and GIS to identify and solve environmental problems. We provide a broad and rigorous curriculum, including field, laboratory, and classroom experiences with an emphasis on inquiry-based instruction to best prepare our majors to be effective scientists.
Our mission is to educate a new generation of scientists and practitioners in the theory and methods of environmental sciences. Our educational programs emphasize a trans-disciplinary approach to understand processes on Earth from the molecular level to global scale. Our curriculum provides a comprehensive and integrated view of the biological, physical-chemical, ecological, human, and social dimensions of the environment. We believe in learning by doing. Field-based and hands-on classroom projects and research activities are the core of our program to advance students to higher learning and to promote understanding of the real-world environmental problems.
Students interested in pursuing careers in the private and public research sector specialized in natural resource management and conservation, geological survey, industrial and business applications, environmental monitoring, park management, Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing, weather forecasting, conservation, stormwater management, and environmental assessment should consider the B.S. Earth Science as majors.
