Program Description
The Kean University Alternate Route program for Teaching English as a Second or Other Language enables candidates to be employed ESL teachers while they are completing their training for initial certification in TESOL. In oder to enter the Alternate Route in TESOL, candidates must first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) from the State. They must then secure a teaching position in a school district. The district is then responsible for providing candidates with the appropriate mentoring and pedagogical training, and for recommending them to the State for certification when they have completed all requirements, including an approved university program.
This program provides to those who hold A CE in TESOL, the specialized content to complete an Alternate Route certification in TESOL. Those who successfully complete all requirements may request a Letter of Completion from Kean, which can be presented by a School district on behalf of a candidate to the State in partial fulfillment of the requirements for TESOL certification through the Alternate Route. Kean in not responsible for recommending these candidates to the State for certification.
