PA 5250 LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

Examination of the topics and emerging issues in the field of leadership and management: identification of the theories of leadership, the differences between leadership and management, how to become a more effective leader. This course introduces students to the complexity of leadership through exploring classic and contemporary leadership theories with explicit connection to leadership practice. Students will learn about leadership concepts on an individual, group, and systemic level. Topics covered include: definitions of leadership, leadership theories, leadership and management, diverse perspectives of leadership, and personal values ad ethics. Through the understanding of these topics, students will heighten their awareness and articulation of their personal leadership philosophy. Through this course, students will develop competence and confidence in their ability to exercise leadership. At the end of this course the student will be able to understand how to: -gain knowledge and skills to exercise effective and ethical leadership -distinguish between different leadership perspectives, approaches, and theories to help frame and guide leadership practice -critically examine leadership presented and practiced in society -acknowledge the presence/practice of leadership in diverse levels of organizations and in personal contexts -understand the similarities and differences between leadership and management -recognize that personal ethics and integrity are critical aspects of leadership
