The goal of this course is to study the devices and techniques used in fiction and to write short stories.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • appreciate the difference between literary fiction and genre fiction in short stories; 
  • nderstand the elements of fiction in the short story form; 
  • analyze published short stories with a basic understanding of literary criticism; 
  • develop an individual writing process that lends itself to creative writing; 
  • understand and practice the skills needed to create short stories; 
  • constructively critique classmates’ work in a writing workshop.
