III. Catalog Course Description

Course is a comprehensive overview of laboratory procedures used in veterinary medicine. Clinical applications of hematology, cytology, serology, urinalysis, and the various tests used to identify specific organ abnormalities will be covered. Strong emphasis is placed on normal verses disease induced changes of hematological parameters.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Implement and utilize basic laboratory safety principles when working in a laboratory setting.   
  • Identify, utilize and maintain the equipment used in a veterinary laboratory.
  • Prepare samples to perform lab diagnostic tests such as urinalysis, hematology, serology and cytology.
  • Identify and recognize normal/abnormal parameters when performing diagnostic tests such as urinalysis, hematology, serology and cytology.
  • Identify and recognize normal sperm cells.
  • Identify common tissues microscopically.
  • Complete AVMA essential skills: LP1-LP26, LP61-LP65, N34 A, N77 A-B, N93, N94, EXO21.
