III. Catalog Course Description

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the alternatives to formal incarceration utilizing resources and facilities within the community.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Define general categories of crimes and describe the components of the criminal justice system.
  • Examine theories regarding criminal behavior.
  • Explore the history of community corrections and identify modern supervision techniques and programs.
  • Examine the functions of sentencing and the role of pre-sentence investigations.
  • Explore the history of probation and distinguish the difference between parole and probation.
  • Examine standard probation and sanctions resulting from probation violations.
  • Describe major characteristics and primary functions of jails and prisons.
  • Define the function of parole and the major issues associated with prisoner reentry.
  • Describe the function of parole boards and the programs associated with early release from prison.
  • Define what "Po’s" do and the qualifications and training required to promote effective officer-client relationships.
  • Examine stress and burnout associated with employment in community corrections and various specialized job opportunities within the profession.
  • Describe special needs populations and methods of supervision.
  • Examine the juvenile justice system and identify various programs and methods of supervision associated with the juvenile population.
  • Define recidivism.
