WELD 107 Safety and Leadership
The student will identify lab organization and safety procedures, demonstrate applied leadership skills and abilities, demonstrate and identify hand tools and their proper usage. The student will also demonstrate and identify power tools and equipment including their proper usage and maintenance. Prerequisite: Instructor Permission and Program Application required.

III. Catalog Course Description
The student will identify lab organization and safety procedures, demonstrate applied leadership skills and abilities, demonstrate and identify hand tools and their proper usage. The student will also demonstrate and identify power tools and equipment including their proper usage and maintenance. Prerequisite: Instructor Permission and Program Application required.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Complete with 100% accuracy an AWS SENSE Module 2 exam
- Describe general shop safety rules and procedures (i.e., safety test)
- Describe OSHA requirements in workplace safety
- Comply with the required use of safety glasses, ear protection, gloves, and shoes during lab/shop activities (i.e., personal protection equipment – PPE)
- Operate lab equipment according to safety guidelines
- Identify and use proper lifting procedures and proper use of support equipment (i.e., rigging, chains, straps, cables)
- Identify and explain proper ventilation procedures for working within the lab/shop area
- Identify marked safety areas
- Identify the location and the types of fire extinguishers and other fire safety equipment; demonstrate knowledge of the procedures for using fire extinguishers and other fire safety equipment
- Identify the location and use of eye wash stations
- Identify the location of the posted evacuation routes
- Secure hair and jewelry for lab/shop activities
- Identify the safety aspects of high voltage circuits
- Locate material safety data sheets (MSDS)
- Perform ongoing housekeeping duties
- Follow verbal instructions to complete work assignments
- Follow written instructions to complete work assignments
- Identify special welding conditions (Hot Work Permits, confined spaces, JSA, etc.)
- Identify & Utilize Hand Tools which includes:
- Demonstrate safe handling and use of appropriate tools
