AUTB 163 Painting and Refinishing
Students participate in interactive classroom and lab exercises on: all phases of metal preparation including sanding, masking, metal treatment, and priming. The spraying of basecoat/clearcoat, color matching, color blending, and the proper care of a paint gun are covered in this course. Safety measures when working with paint and other refinishing materials are stressed.

III. Catalog Course Description
Students participate in interactive classroom and lab exercises on: all phases of metal preparation including sanding, masking, metal treatment, and priming. The spraying of basecoat/clearcoat, color matching, color blending, and the proper care of a paint gun are covered in this course. Safety measures when working with paint and other refinishing materials are stressed.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Identify and utilize personal safety equipment and procedures
- Identify vehicle, make, model, and year using the VIN (vehicle identification number)
- Analysis coating condition and determine proper repair steps
- Obtain paint codes and identify the paint technologies from assigned vehicles
- Identify paint formulas by referencing paint codes to paint formulas using the "DuPont Color Selector Guide"
- Determine quantity of refinishing materials required for an assigned project
- Record color formula on color mixing and evaluation worksheet and decipher paint formulas using a microfiche viewer
- Correctly mix color formulas using appropriate mixing containers and electronic mixing scales
- Evaluate color match using milar film and a Draw down bar
- Evaluate color match using checkered spray out sheet and spray equipment
- Properly prepare original finish\substrate and apply pre-coat materials, primer surfacer/filler to assigned panels or vehicle body components
- Properly prepare primed substrate and apply primer sealers, colorcoats and clearcoats to assigned panels or vehicle body components
- Evaluate applied finish for proper color match, texture and gloss
- Properly blend basecoat/clearcoat topcoats
- Properly blend single-stage topcoats
- Identify and repair finish defects that can be repaired without refinishing
