MUS-213 History of Popular Music: Rebellion, Bling, and Authenticity

This course surveys the history of popular music, including an examination of its folk roots. Particular focus is given to the following or similar issues: music as a medium for protest and rebellion; the commercialization of music; creating a sense of authenticity; and the politics of participation. No musical experience is necessary for students.
