AM7203 Survey of Biomedical Diagnosis and Evaluation Lecture/Lab

This survey course uses lecture and hands-on formats to provide students with a deeper understanding of physical medicine skills, laboratory findings, imaging reports, and orthopedic and neurological assessment of Western medicine. The course content informs the practice of acupuncture to allow students to collaborate with other health professionals in an informed manner. It also broadens their understanding of pain mechanisms. The students learn practical skills involved in a comprehensive physical exam, assessment of cranial nerve function, hearing and vision. They learn to interpret laboratory and imaging reports used to evaluate patients’ states of health. The laboratory screens included are basic chemistry, immunochemistry, hematology, cytology, microbiology, endocrine and molecular testing. The instructor introduces students to imaging procedures such as diagnostic ultrasound, X-ray, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine and fluoroscopy. Emphasis here is placed on reading and interpreting the radiologist reports.
