MED 6000 Elementary Mathematics for Teachers

This course is designed to build a strong conceptual understanding of basic mathematics concepts. A basic premise of the course is that mathematics is more than the memorization of rules and procedures. This course will help teachers develop a clear understanding of fundamental concepts (as outlined in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Content and Mathematical Practices including counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, numbers, and operations in base ten, measurement and data, geometry, and fractions) and learn how to teach mathematics in a student-centered, participatory learning environment. The textbook, Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Teaching Developmentally, and Open Up Resources materials will be integrated into this course. The course is designed to focus on one key topic of elementary mathematics for a week (or two) with high levels of student engagement. The overarching premise of the course is that mathematics is more than the memorization of rules and procedures. The course will help teachers develop a clear understanding of fundamental concepts and learn how to teach mathematics in a student-centered, participatory learning environment.
