Focuses upon the works of major American writers and analyzes how they deploy race in the literary process of imagining and representing American identity. Authors may include Stephen Crane, Kate Chopin, Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Chesnutt, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Mark Twain.
