ENGL 162 Reconstructing Americans: US Literature, 1865-1900

Focuses on writings from the decades after the Civil War, when formerly enslaved people, immigrants, and women moved to US cities and found work in factories instead of on their childhood plantations and farms. Explores the accompanying challenges to racial and gender stereotypes, the new problems, and the queer possibilities of the era.
