SE4012 Management of Advanced Systems Engineering

This course provides the student with an understanding of architecting, Object Oriented Systems Engineering, the Unified Modeling Language, and the control of complex projects with many Systems Engineers through the use of metrics. Specific emphasis is placed on exploring the relationship between science, art, deductive processes, inductive processes, systems engineering, and acquisition management. In order to solve today's complex problems, the student will become familiar with heuristic tools. Prerequisites: None.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate the challenges and solutions for integrating the disciplines of Program Management and Systems Engineering into an effective entity that leads a successful program.
  • Assess the application of Program Management and Systems Engineering integration theory to a range of real-world programs and evaluate how successfully the programs applied the theory.
  • Analyze successful and unsuccessful programs and the validity of lessons learned during their execution as well as develop additional lessons that should have been learned by those executing the program.
  • Apply critical analysis of proposed solutions to current program management and systems engineering challenges and develop well-reasoned arguments that support or refute those solutions.
  • Describe the business and operating concepts essential to effective systems engineering and program management at the program management office level and how those concepts should adjust to an evolving acquisition environment.
  • Describe the processes involved in policy formulation and execution in the defense acquisition environment and how to influence these processes while serving as senior Program Management Office team leader.
