SE3250 Capability Engineering

This course presents a systems engineering approach to determining military capabilities required to execute a mission set. It introduces simulation as a method for assessing performance of a capabilities portfolio. Topics covered include current DOD and Naval practices for capabilities engineering, design and assessment of capability portfolios, and use of custom simulations to analyze capability portfolio performance.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Describe the DoD and Navy processes for determining required capabilities. 
  • Describe the existing Navy taxonomy of capabilities.
  • Construct a capabilities portfolio against a given set of missions.
  • Construct low-resolution and high-resolution continuous models that represent various military systems at the appropriate level of detail. 
  • Construct low-resolution and high-resolution discrete event models that represent various military systems at the appropriate level of detail.
  • Demonstrate how to include the probabilistic nature of system performance into mathematical models.
  • Interpret the probabilistic results of a model to determine the effectiveness of a system.
  • Utilize confidence intervals to capture the stochastic nature of capability models. 
  • Perform verification and validation on the mathematical models using theoretical or asymptotic results. 
  • Evaluate performance metrics to determine if they are useful for assessing the effectiveness of different systems within a set of alternative designs for a given capability. 
  • Perform design of experiments studies to identify the system attributes that significantly impact a given system's capability. 
  • Perform a cost assessment of a set of alternative designs for a given capability.
