OS4081 Cost Estimating and Analysis Capstone I

This course focuses on learning from participating in a cost estimation team project. Small-teams (4-6 students) will be given an actual cost estimating analysis project drawn from actual cost problems compiled by the major systems commands and Service Cost Agencies from the departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Emphasis is on cost problem formulation, identification of objectives, measures of effectiveness, articulation of critical assumptions, and outlining of appropriate analytical methods. Class time during the quarter is used for team progress briefings and critical class discussion.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will demonstrate you can:

  • As a team, develop, present, and execute a Cost Estimation and Analysis Study Plan that provides a goal oriented, sequenced timeline that will facilitate completion of your Systems Analysis project.
  • Effectively select applicable Cost Estimating tools and demonstrate proficiency in their use during the conduct of your analysis.
  • Identify and apply appropriate analytical methodologies, to include problem formulation objective identification, metrics application and data collection and analysis, to provide a decision maker a solid foundation for his/her course of action selection.
  • Communicate study progress in a comprehensive, yet succinct, manner by developing an Executive level presentation and writing a 3,000 – 5,000-word summary report.
