IS3001 Information Sciences for Defense

The purpose of this course is to introduce first quarter students from the Information Systems and Technology and the Joint C4I curricula to an overview of the information environment in the Department of Defense. During this quarter students will be exposed to the tactical and business systems, technologies, organization, culture, policies and issues regarding the acquisition, operations and management of technology. Specific topics include the DoD information environment, enterprise architecture and systems, systems development polices and processes as well as critical issues of security, privacy and issues of identity. Prerequisites: None.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

 

·       Define the DoD Information Environment and explain its significance in contemporary military operations.

·       Analyze the components and implications of the cyber technology environment within the DoD context.

·       Evaluate systems policies and problems within the DoD Information Environment and propose strategic solutions.

·       Assess the concepts of security and privacy within the DoD context, identifying potential threats and mitigation strategies.

·       Describe the scale and scope of an enterprise within the context of the Department of Defense.

·       Explain the principles of enterprise architecture and its role in optimizing organizational performance within the DoD.

·       Apply principles of data science and big data analytics to enhance decision-making processes within the DoD enterprise.

·       Evaluate the advantages and challenges of implementing cloud environments in the DoD context.

·       Demonstrate understanding of DoD IT leadership principles and their impact on organizational effectiveness.

·       Analyze make or buy decisions (sourcing) within the DoD context, considering cost, efficiency, and security implications.

·       Propose strategies for DoD business systems transformation to enhance agility and adaptability in response to changing needs.

·       Assess the role and functionality of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems within the DoD enterprise, identifying opportunities for optimization and integration.
