CY3000 Introduction to Cyber Systems and Operations

This course provides an overview of policies, organizations, and systems affecting the conduct of military cyberspace operations.  Topics include operational authorities and command relationships, cyber lines of operation, legal and ethical considerations, adversary actor motivations and capabilities, and cyberspace risk management.  Real-world examples, case studies, and guest speakers are utilized to address salient topics from an operationally relevant perspective.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

• Critically analyze cyber policy documents, military doctrine, and academic papers on cyber policy and cyber activities to assess strengths, weaknesses, and implications.
• Identify risks and opportunities associated with cyber policy in a manner that accounts for national objectives, national and international law and convention, and other factors.
• Assess the cyber activity of threat actors (nation and non-state) in the context of the actors’ national or group objectives, their operational structures, and the tactics, techniques, and procedures that they employ.
• Use traditional and evolving models of cyberspace to compare various approaches to the employment of military cyber capabilities to confront adversarial cyberspace activity.
