VETT 121 Clinical Laboratory Procedures 2*

Course acquaints students with the identification and culturing techniques of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses in domestic species. Antibiotic sensitivity and control of infectious agents will also be addressed. Students will also become familiar with the biology and identification of internal and external parasites of domestic animals. Emphasis is placed on routine diagnostic tests as well as clinical manifestations of parasitism and preventative measures.

III. Catalog Course Description

Course acquaints students with the identification and culturing techniques of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses in domestic species. Antibiotic sensitivity and control of infectious agents will also be addressed. Students will also become familiar with the biology and identification of internal and external parasites of domestic animals. Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

• Implement and utilize basic laboratory safety principles when working in a laboratory setting
• Identify, utilize and maintain the equipment using in a veterinary laboratory
• Prepare samples to perform lab diagnostic tests such as fecals, heartworm, mastitis testing, microbiological tests and fungal cultures
• Categorize internal and external parasites by species affected, classification, zoonotic potential, routes of infection and pathogenesis
• Complete AVMA Essential Skills: OCC11-12; N64; LP3-4; LP27-58
• Visually identify common internal and external parasite of the following domestic species: canine, feline, bovine, equine, caprine, and avian
