III. Catalog Course Description

This course focuses on continuing surgical theory. The course provides study of special problems that correlate with the individual needs of students during clinical practice and assists students in testing job seeking skills and in preparation to write the AST National Certification Examination.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • 2. Demonstrate beginning (entry level) scrub abilities by scrubbing as assigned in clinical rotations in all areas of surgical specialty.
  • 5. Demonstrate competency in perioperative patient care.
  • 4. Demonstrate knowledge of and safe handling of medications, instruments, and equipment in clinical rotations.
  • 3. Demonstrate safe peri-operative patient care including pre, intra, and post-operative patient care.
  • 1. Demonstrate competency in and general knowledge of the surgical technologist by active participation in all phases of working as a surgical technologist (in the student role) in the OR.
