MLTE 226 Immunology and Laboratory Operations

This course offers an overview of the fundamentals of medical lab-related diagnosis and management of disease by immunological and molecular biology laboratory methods. Normal immune function as well as pathological conditions and application to laboratory testing will be covered. Examination aspects of laboratory operations to include quality assessment, troubleshooting, safety, laboratory mathematics, instrumentation and laboratory information systems.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course offers an overview of the fundamentals of medical lab-related diagnosis and management of disease by immunological and molecular biology laboratory methods. Normal immune function as well as pathological conditions and application to laboratory testing will be covered. Examination aspects of laboratory operations to include quality assessment, troubleshooting, safety, laboratory mathematics, instrumentation and laboratory information systems.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Assess pre-analytic and analytic factors that can affect patient results.
  • Perform basic laboratory calculations and evaluate quality control data.
  • Describe elements of quality management systems and information technology.
  • State basic concepts regarding instrumentation for spectrometry, turbitimetry, nephelometry, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, fluorometry, luminensence, osmometry, electrochemistry, blood gas analyzers, balances, centrifuges, heating units, electrophoresis chromatography, and mass spectrophotometry.
  • Describe the basic principles of methodology commonly utilized in chemistry, immunological and molecular related automated instruments.
  • State the general abnormality and serologic evidence in autoimmune diseases, tumor associate antigens, primary immunodeficiency disorders, hypersensitivity, complement system , phagocyte deficiencies, acquired immunodeficiences and key infectious diseases.
  • Define terms related to molecular diagnostics.
  • Discuss the clinical implications for the commonly ordered immunological and molecular related test results.
  • Correlate all patient test data for acceptability and be able to recognize reasons for “abnormal” results.
