This course is designed to prepare the student for Math 123. It covers properties of real numbers with emphasis on positive and negative numbers, order of operations agreement, variable terms and expressions, linear equations in one variable, polynomials, factoring, basic graphing techniques, inequalities, an introduction to radicals, and the rational number system, including fractions and decimals.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course is designed to prepare the student for Math 123. It covers properties of real numbers with emphasis on positive and negative numbers, order of operations agreement, variable terms and expressions, linear equations in one variable, polynomials, factoring, basic graphing techniques, inequalities, an introduction to radicals, and the rational number system, including fractions and decimals.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Develop and expand mathematical literacy skills
  • Engage in applying mathematical problem solving by interpreting, solving, evaluating, and simplifying
  • Use mathematical tools to be able to analyze application problems and to correctly provide solution

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of the following processes and concepts: Whole numbers (rounding, writing in expanded form, prime factorization) Integers (adding, subtracting, multiplying dividing) Rational Numbers (GCF, LCM, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, converting between fractions and decimals) Variable Expressions (evaluating, combining like terms, using the distributive property) Solving Linear Equations (general first-order linear equations, mixture problems, uniform motion problems) Proportion and Percent (ratios, writing percents as decimals or fractions, use the basic percent equation, simple interest, percent increase and decrease, markup and discount) Polynomials (adding, subtracting, multiplying) Integer Exponents and Scientific Notation Factoring (GCF, trinomials) Linear Equations in Two Variables (rectangular coordinate system, graphing points, x- and y-intercepts, slope, applications) Functions (function notation, linear functions) Sets (roster method, set-builder notation, interval notation, unions, intersections) Radical Expressions (simplifying, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing radical expressions with numeric values) Measurements (metric system, conversions) These additional, optional topics may be covered by some instructors: Geometry (perimeter, area, volume) Statistics (graphs, mean, median, mode) Systems of Equations
