EQUS 230 Introduction to Horseshoeing

This course covers the basic principles of horseshoeing. Students will learn the anatomy of the front and hind leg and hooves and learn to identify structural and mechanical deformities, blemishes and occurrences of lameness.  This course will also cover the proper use of horseshoeing tools, and how to trim and balance the equine hoof.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course covers the basic principles of horseshoeing. Students will learn the anatomy of the front and hind leg and hooves and learn to identify structural and mechanical deformities, blemishes and occurrences of lameness.  This course will also cover the proper use of horseshoeing tools, and how to trim and balance the equine hoof.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Identify all bones, tendons, and ligaments of the lower equine leg and describe their function
  • Identify the parts of the hoof and differentiate between sensitive and insensitive structures
  • Describe the different causes of lameness, diseases, and treatments of the hoof
  • Be able to pick up a horse's foot and hold it safely
  • Correctly trim and balance a hoof
  • Assess and differentiate a good foot trim from a bad trim
  • Explain the different styles of horseshoes and their practical use
