This course provides a profile of the dental hygienist within a legal and ethical framework. Examines state practice acts. Students will explore the responsibilities involved in hygienist/patient and employer relationships. The student will investigate the legal ramifications of a variety of practice settings. Case studies will be used for clarification models to encourage ethical and professional development

  • Evaluate how HIPPA protects patient confidentiality.
  • Compare and contrasts business, time management and alternative practice settings for dental hygienist
  • Construct the steps in decision making process.
  • Express core values and principles used to solve an ethical dilemma.
  • Compare and contrast types and circumstances of supervision found in the Dental/Dental Hygiene Practice Act of the jurisdiction in which the student resides or plans to reside.
  • Defend the benefits of professional membership.
  • Interpret the Code of Ethics of the American Dental Hygienist Association.
  • Argue the right of patients protected by law and duties of providers regulated by law from both ethical and legal perspective.
  • Appraise the scope of job searching, employment opportunities, process of interview, benefits and apply negotiating skills related to employee benefits.
  • Critique the role of social justice in determining ethical behavior.
  • Compare and contrast the ethical principles found in codes of ethics, informed consent, patients’ bill of rights and other documents relating to patient care.
