DENH 265 Special Needs Patients

This course is designed to strengthen the student's knowledge base and skills in assessment, diagnosis, planning and treatment of dental patients with developmental disabilities, complex medical problems and significant physical limitations. Activities and case studies will develop critical thinking and problem solving skills for care of the patient and their special needs: prevention of dental office emergencies: and selection of treatment protocols will be important factors.

This course is designed to strengthen the student's knowledge base and skills in assessment, diagnosis, planning and treatment of dental patients with developmental disabilities, complex medical problems and significant physical limitations. Activities and case studies will develop critical thinking and problem solving skills for care of the patient and their special needs: prevention of dental office emergencies: and selection of treatment protocols will be important factors.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Assess and interpret effective strategies for providing management of the dental emergency; use current literature and effective strategies for the provision of care to the medically compromised, developmentally disabled and special needs patient.
  • Define and pronounce key terms.
  • Appraise the demographics, etiology, limitations and diseases associated with medically compromises, developmentally disabilities and significant physical limitation patients.
  • Integrate knowledge of medications, oral manifestations and emergency protocols in the management of special needs or emergency conditions.
  • Negotiate and progress though assignments to develop Critical thinking and skill development.
  • Recognition of Special Needs in the community and demonstration of care plan construction and implementation.
  • Synthesis of DH care plan to the “real world” practice of Dental Hygiene.
  • Select communication and implementation skills with caregivers and dental patients to apply evidence based preventive dental care in an ethical and culturally acceptable environment.
  • Critique physical, mental medical social and special needs of people who are compromised.
