III. Catalog Course Description

This course is taken in conjunction with DENH 251. Clinical Dental Hygiene will focus on the dental hygiene process of care, advanced instrumentation techniques and treatment of the moderate to advanced periodontal patient. Recognizing medical emergencies, identifying eating disorders and illegal drug use will be demonstrated and developed.

  • Integrate and articulate accurate dental and professional terminology in all lab and clinical activities.
  • Select, schedule and complete patients who meet the stated criteria for each clinical course requirement.
  • Collect and analyze all data necessary for appropriate treatment planning including medical history, extra/intraoral exam, dental charting, radiography, periodontal assessment and personal dialogue.
  • Assess patient conditions and implement a treatment plan based on conditions identified and considering patient behavioral, sociological, psychological, physiological and economic factors.
  • Select and provide comprehensive evidence-based dental hygiene care as indicated by the patient's needs.
  • Perform Patient education and home care instructions for all patients at each visit.
  • Understand the concepts and principles and demonstrate the techniques of correct instrumentation to effectively detect and remove hard and soft deposits with no tissue trauma.
  • Maintain patient comfort, clean work area, accurate dental records and timely patient care.
