III. Catalog Course Description

The Lab experience will prepare the students for administration of local anesthesia for dental hygiene procedures. Demonstration with laboratory and clinical experience in administration of local anesthesia and Nitrous Oxide conscious sedation.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Each student will utilize critical thinking skills when selecting a type of local anesthetic, technique and indications for post-operative pain control while treating second year clinic patients
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills when indicating the need for Nitrous Oxide sedation in a patient’s dental hygiene care plan
  • Interpretation skills will be utilized when reviewing each patient’s medical history, vital signs, and assessments gathered before delivery of anesthetic
  • Medical emergency competencies will be reviewed in class discussion, videos and activities
  • Documentation skills will be reviewed after delivering local anesthesia or nitrous oxide
  • Demonstrate knowledge of head and neck anatomy
  • Describe properties of specific anesthetic agents
