This Course provides both the theoretical and laboratory/clinical applications of dental materials in the oral environment. From this knowledge base, students learn to understand the role of dental materials in the delivery of preventative and restorative care. The composition, properties, and manipulation of materials used in dentistry, as well as procedures used during application, will be emphasized.

III. Catalog Course Description

This Course provides both the theoretical and laboratory/clinical applications of dental materials in the oral environment. From this knowledge base, students learn to understand the role of dental materials in the delivery of preventative and restorative care. The composition, properties, and manipulation of materials used in dentistry, as well as procedures used during application, will be emphasized.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Describe the and Identify characteristics dental materials must possess to endure in the oral environment, other names, all the possible situations used with justification, life expectancy of the material in the oral cavity, indication, contraindications, expected outcomes, as indicated on their Procedural flow charts and competencies
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills when selecting a dental material, technique of application and indications for post maintenance
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills when indicating material and technique to be used in the lab and latter in their patient’s dental hygiene care plan
  • Contrast bonding characteristics of metals ceramics plastics and composites Interpretation skills will be used when reviewing each patient’s need for maintenance and treatment and assessments gathered in developing the dental care plan
  • Relate Physical and mechanical properties of materials
  • Provide students the opportunity to test their knowledge and prepare for board examinations
  • Successfully demonstrate knowledge principles of dental materials
