IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Make detailed and relevant observations of their experiment as it proceeds and accurately interpret the results
  • Perform a variety of standard organic chemical reactions reinforcing and expanding upon the lecture material
  • Be able to predict and explain the outcome of a stereoselective or regioselective reaction using concepts such as steric hindrance, electronic effects, and thermodynamic or kinetic control.
  • Have experience with responsible chemical waste disposal
  • Be able to read, comprehend, and synthesize information from advanced-level written material.
  • Clearly and accurately communicate their results and an understanding of what those results mean as a part of a formal lab report
  • Acquire skill in and understanding of the basic techniques of organic chemistry including extraction, distillation, recrystallization, chromatography and spectroscopy by frequent use of these techniques.
  • Understand practical considerations in experimental design for organic chemistry
  • Have hands-on experience obtaining real data from their own samples with spectrometers (NMR, IR, UV-Vis) and other analytical techniques (GC, TLC, melting point).
  • Interpret a wide variety of spectroscopic and analytical data.
  • Be able to identify major sources of error in an experiment
