IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Should be able to prepare a laboratory report that meets the specified criteria for each experiment as outlined by the instructor. These reports may vary from short data summary reports to full length reports such as might be prepared for publication. The instructor may use a variety of report formats during the course of the semester;
  • The overall purpose is to show the ability to perform laboratory experiments that are precise and accurate and follow good laboratory practices in the handling, use and disposal of all chemicals used in the laboratory;
  • Calibrate glassware as a function of temperature and volume
  • Work safely and neatly in a laboratory following all applicable rules for use of chemicals and proper documentation of lab results include laboratory notebooks, reports and chain-of-custody documents;
  • Demonstrate understanding of the use and role of different types of glassware and equipment in the lab by making proper selections of equipment with which to perform the experiment when only generalized directions are given
  • Demonstrate ability to perform at least three of the classical methods of analysis (see “h” in the class portion of the course criteria immediately above as evidenced by experiments performed within acceptable accuracy and precision requirements as stated by the instructor
  • Demonstrate mastery of all calculations used in the laboratory for data analysis and data evaluation;
  • Show general understanding in the data analysis from the types of instrumental methods that are covered in class as listed in part “j” above in the class portion discussion as evidenced by analysis of samples either analyzed by the student, analyzed by the instructor and presented to the student, or obtained from literature sources when appropriate equipment is not available
  • Should be able to use a spreadsheet format for all types of data reduction and data presentation
