IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Students will learn to characterize and purify a variety of organic and bioorganic molecules either isolated from natural sources or as the product of course correlated reactions using standard organic chemistry laboratory procedures and equipment
  • Students will acquire skill in and understanding of the basic techniques of organic chemistry including extraction, distillation, recrystallization, chromatography and spectroscopy by frequent use of these techniques.
  • Students will follow experimental procedures, collect and analyze data for experiments related to concepts discussed in lecture and record their work in a lab notebook following standard notebook format protocol
  • Make detailed and relevant observations of their experiment as it proceeds and accurately interpret the results.
  • Understand practical considerations in experimental design for organic chemistry.
  • Clearly and accurately communicate their results and an understanding of what those results mean as a part of a formal lab report
  • Be able to identify major sources of error in an experiment
  • Have experience with responsible chemical waste disposal
  • Students will follow experimental procedures, collect and analyze data for experiments related to concepts discussed in lecture and record their work in a lab notebook following standard notebook format protocol
