HREC 134 Backcountry Travel

This course is designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in a multi-day backcountry excursion. Skills like trip planning, pack fit and packing, hiking skills, Wilderness navigation, campsite selection, cooking, bear protocols, and sleeping warm will be practiced. The course also covers the principles and practices of minimal impact outdoor techniques through the Leave No Trace Principles. The course includes a backpacking excursion. This course may taken twice for credit (total of 6 hours in a degree).  Fee Required.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Students will be able to take care of themselves and other people in remote/harsh environments.
  • Students will develop the skills to navigate through remote terrain.
  • Students will develop the skills to establish backcountry camps.
  • Students will develop the skills to cook nourishing meals in the backcountry.
  • Students will develop the skills to practice hygiene and self-care in the backcountry.
  • Students will gain experience with various backcountry shelters.
  • Students will gain the skills to remain found in the backcountry.
  • Students will gain familiarity with the Leave No Trace Principles, a standard set of ethics promoted by federal land managers.
