This course offers an in-depth look at furniture design and construction. Students will be challenged with new concepts and construction to create innovative designs and build one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture. It will challenge the woodworkers in advancement of their abilities in design, layout, joinery, shaping and thinking outside the box. The student will work with new textures, styles, media and finishes.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course offers an in-depth look at furniture design and construction. Students will be challenged with new concepts and construction to create innovative designs and build one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture. It will challenge the woodworkers in advancement of their abilities in design, layout, joinery, shaping and thinking outside the box. The student will work with new textures, styles, media and finishes.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Build at least three pieces of furniture such as a chair, table and a cabinet of some type using specialized skills
  • Understand various types of furniture popular throughout history and will be tasked with replicating a version of a piece of their choosing
  • Properly use machinery in their production of their individual projects and group projects alike
  • Demonstrate their design difference from other styles of similar project in oral reports to class, to be assessed
  • Be able to work together as a team to complete a group task
