BIOL 230L Donor Body Prosection

This course will allow students to participate in the prosection of a preserved donated human cadaver and preparation of the donor body for use in BIOL 105, BIOL 227, and BIOL 228. Students will build upon the concepts taught in BIOL 105, BIOL 227 and BIOL 228 as they actively dissect donor bodies. This course will include laboratory work and individual study time. Prerequisite: completion of, or concurrent enrollment in BIOL 105,  BIOL 227, or BIOL 228; or Instructor permission.  This course may be repeated once.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course will allow students to participate in the prosection of a preserved donated human cadaver and preparation of the donor body for use in BIOL 105, BIOL 227, and BIOL 228. Students will build upon the concepts taught in BIOL 105, BIOL 227 and BIOL 228 as they actively dissect donor bodies. This course will include laboratory work and individual study time. Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

• Create a detailed anatomical resource and prosection plan, with specific anatomical content and a thoughtful, attractive and functional design that will guide weekly dissections.
• Describe and identify the anatomical structures of the assigned dissection region.
• Apply anatomical knowledge to the process of dissection; recognize, interpret, and document anatomical variations and pathologies.
• Communicate and demonstrate knowledge of anatomy with peers and course instructor through a detailed presentation of dissection region.
• Describe and apply appropriate standard operating procedures in a gross anatomy lab, including; personal protection, sharps disposal, donor body care, first aid procedures, chemical and tissue handling/storage.
• Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior.
